Do you have a story that you think should be included in the Vault? Let me know!
Please note - I no longer accept self-submissions. I'm sad to say that in my experience, most authors lack the objectivity to judge the quality of their own writing, and it's soul-crushing to have to tell folks that I don't agree with their self-assessments. I'm sorry.

I applaud you good sir for coming up with this site.
ReplyDeleteIt pains me even now to see so many bronies who don't recognize the writers and stories of the oldfriend era.
And here you are thinking ahead to a time beyond when many even want to ponder.
Thank you very much!
DeleteOldfriend Era? I think it's much too soon to using that kind of term. The fandom is still quite young, and putting the older bronies on a pillar of experience this soon doesn't help the "love and tolerance" thing.
ReplyDeleteOn a better note, making another site to review the best of the best is always worthwhile. I do hope you'll be reviewing some more non-6-star fics. Some fics are really well written, but [Sad] and [Dark] tags draw low reviews with few exceptions.
The epub files are a good touch, too. I've been trying to make decent epub files from the fics, but I don't have the time or patience to format everything properly.
It's a young fandom... but there seems to be a lot of burnout, as it were - lots of fans and authors who were active in the beginning have disappeared.
DeleteI use the star ratings on EqD when looking for new stories to feature as a guide, but I'm certainly not tied to them, and in fact would be glad to feature an overlooked or underrated story if it was deserving - if you have any suggestions, please let me know.
I am neurotic enough to ensure all the stories are formatted correctly, more or less by hand - and once the HTML's created, it's a short jump to the other formats.
Thank you so much for creating and maintaining this site! I very much appreciate the mobile formats as well as the careful selection. The mini interviews with the authors are a great addition.
ReplyDeleteI travel a lot and if it weren't for the ability to put pony fiction onto my kindle, I would hardly have the time to read any of it. I've converted some of the must-read fics myself but it's a pain in the plot and the formatting is always a bit wonky. You're providing a wonderful service!
You should add a PayPal donate button to the site! (hint, hint)
And thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you find the ebooks helpful. (Under the Fanfiction header in the sidebar is a deviantArt link - this leads to MaximillianVeers' extensive and daily-updated PDF fic gallery, maybe you can find more there that work for you.)
DeleteI also appreciate the implication that you'd be willing to donate, but I would be uncomfortable accepting. I'm merely a content aggregator - the authors featured here are responsible for both the stories themselves and the interviews about them. It may sound trite, but the result of the work and the knowledge that others enjoy it is payment enough for my time. All I might ask from a reader is that they would let the author know they enjoyed their story.
What is your policy on adult content in fics? I don't have much taste for gore, but I can think of a couple stellar pieces of writing that also happen to be clop.
ReplyDeleteI'm not against clop or gore; in general, I would expect the clop or gore to be integral to the story's plot and in-character, along with being well-written, etc. Romance Reports is already 'queued', waiting for SleeplessBrony to make his final revisions and cleanup. If you have any others, please let me know.
DeleteI found Pony Fiction Vault via the Pride interview post you put on FimFiction.net. This is a most noble endeavor indeed and I wish you the best of luck. Kudos on getting the Pride interview before he left the community.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!
DeleteI think that this site is a wonderful idea. To give a single, deserving story a spotlight regardless of genre or other surface qualities is a brilliant concept that I sincerely hope will blossom as the fandom grows. I know of too many readers that will dismiss a story based on petty qualities such as genre or rating (I, too, am guilty of this). And the fact that you are so enthusiastic about the entire endeavor, and the fact that you are willing to give up your time and not only spotlight a fiction, but also interview its hard-working author, only adds to the gem of kindness that is this site and its creator.
ReplyDeleteThat said... it's still an endeavor, to be quite fair, with all of the fiction you have to read through. If the Vault increases in popularity, which it likely will (I've already recommended it), will one person still be enough to handle an increase of submissions? Forgive me for my skepticism, but even if you enjoy reading through mountains of fiction, it's hard for me to believe that's the most efficient way to go about things. I can only imagine how long your review queue is.
All in all, though, I implore you to keep up the good work and continue to do what you do!
I very much appreciate your kind words, and what I'm choosing to interpret as concern for my mental well-being!
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed a great deal of work - used to be more, before I dropped to one major update per week - and also probably utterly inefficient. However, the Vault is a very personal project, something I intentionally designed to engage what I see as my individual talents based on my past projects and hobbies. Each step in the process, as menial as cleaning up the HTML formatting on the interviews, is something I take genuine pleasure in doing, and I consider each new post and set of ebooks a personal accomplishment. Farming out any part of the process is simply unthinkable to me.
On the one hand, that means that everything takes longer, because I must do everything. On the other, it's the only way I can personally ensure the level of quality, in the posts and ebooks, that I'm happy with. "Quality over quantity" is arguably the core tenant of the Vault, on a couple of levels...

I suppose as long as all worthy fiction is stored in the Vault at one point or another, I have no right to object to how or when it happens. Perhaps its my own longing to involve myself in this process that's causing me to voice my concerns. The Vault is in its early stages, true, but I know a gem of a site when I see one. Here's to another billion words of Ponyfiction in the coming year!
I have a nomination for you to consider: the work of Skywriter ( http://www.fimfiction.net/user/Skywriter ), one of the preeminent humor writers in the fandom. He's written one not-a-humor-story story, "Indiscretions," and that is a gorgeous thing as well.
ReplyDeleteHis series "Infernal Machines" and "Contraptionology!" are his best work.
Huh, you know what? I've had Observatory Hill in my review queue for a while. I'll keep an eye on the Contraptionology! series.
Deleteumm hello i was wondering if you could give your opinion on a story i am writing, if i am bothering you i am sorry. its just that this is my first every story and I want to know how I am doing, and thanks for reading this
ReplyDeleteHey broseph, you're totally barking up the wrong tree. Go to http://www.ponychan.com/fic/ and you'll find all kinds of people willing to help with ideas and writing basics.
DeleteHey, what Present Perfect said! Also, if you check out the sidebar on the right, there's a Resources section with links to writing guides and references, /fic/ ('cause PP got the link a little wrong), and a blog called Pony Draft that sounds like what you're looking for.
DeleteGoddammit, why isn't everything .com? :|
DeleteIn my case, 'cause I'm a big enough nerd that it bugged me a little to register a non-corporation/company a .com address... though actually you've got a point, FIMFic is .net too, ponychan... kinda weird. Maybe everyone's registrars were running a deal on .net domains at the time!
DeleteWhat a great idea for a website! I've heard of this place a few times now but didn't check it out until now (I saw it mentioned once again in a FimFiction interview post and decided to see what it was all about.) I'm horrified to see that I've only read about one in four of the fics hosted here! (And the ones I HAVE read have been some of my absolute favorites, so I'm sure the rest will be just as good). I'll be filling up (or well, not really, .epub doesn't seem to take up much hard-drive space) my newly purchased reading pad with the entire collection immediately!
ReplyDeleteThanks for saving me countless hours of trawling though less-than-stellar fics in search of these gems!
It is my absolute pleasure. (Do take note there's an "All Stories" download link - wouldn't want you to miss that and have to pull down all 49 manually!)
DeleteYour last line does an especially good job of encapsulating the goal of the Vault.
Hello there. I have just recently discovered this site, and I find it much to my liking. I have a story here I would like to submit, and I hope that you like it enough to approve it.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.fimfiction.net/story/58211/Vivmort
Thank you very much for the suggestion; I've added it to my queue.
DeleteThanks for putting this together!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great source of finding great stories to read. I am oftentimes disappointed with the ones that they feature over at EQD or the high ranking ones at fimfiction, so having a site that only has quality work is a big help.
So yeah, thank you :)
May I ask, have you considered featuring/reading/putting on queue "Background Pony" by shortskirtsandexplosions or "Project Sunflower" by Hoppy McGee? These 2 are the only stories so far that have made it to my personal favorites list but not here.
Thank you for the suggestions, and the kind words about the site!
DeleteJust wanted to drop you a line and say I love what you're doing. I've found some of the most amazing stories from your recommendations, and the epub files you provide permit me to read when I'm traveling.
ReplyDeleteThank you, and please keep up the great work!
Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoy it!
